The American dog tick, also called the wood tick, is commonly found across the U.S. except in the Rocky Mountain area. These ticks are brown with grayish-white markings and can grow between 3/16” and 5/8” when fully engorged. Their shape is oval and flattened, with larvae having six legs and adults eight.
Though they prefer to feed on dogs, they can bite humans and spread diseases like Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Spring and early summer are peak times for exposure. Regularly checking pets and maintaining a tidy yard can help prevent infestations.
The Brown Dog Tick, noted for its reddish-brown hue, typically infests dogs and is widespread, especially in warmer climates like California. Though dogs are their preferred hosts, these ticks can also bite humans.
As adults, Brown Dog Ticks measure around 1/8″ but can grow up to 1/2″ when engorged. These ticks have six legs as larvae and eight legs as nymphs and adults. Prompt removal from pets is vital to prevent health issues. Regularly inspect pets and clean their environments to help keep tick infestations under control.
Pacific Coast ticks are frequently found in shrublands and trails from Oregon to Baja California, and they are present in La Mesa. These ticks are most active in cooler months, particularly in April and May. Adults usually feed on large mammals like deer, horses, and cattle, but will also bite humans and dogs.
These ticks can spread diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, tularemia, and bovine anaplasmosis. Livestock is also at risk for tick-bite paralysis. Studies show that up to 11% of adult ticks carry the bacteria causing Pacific Coast tick fever, which can often be mistaken for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
Western Black-Legged Ticks are commonly found in Pacific Coast regions and British Columbia, where they are known carriers of Lyme disease. They live in forests, grasslands, and areas close to water, and can also be found in scrub-shrub environments. Though related to the Eastern Black-Legged Tick, they are most prevalent on the West Coast.
Adult ticks are active from early December through early summer. Nymphs peak during April, May, and June, feeding on small animals like lizards and rodents. They rarely bite humans or pets. Keeping your yard clear of debris and trimming vegetation can help reduce the tick population.
At La Mesa Pest Control, our tick control service begins with an in-depth inspection of your property. Our technician will locate tick-friendly areas such as tall grass, shrubs, and shaded regions, focusing on spots where ticks are likely to thrive.
We also check where pets spend time, as these areas are often tick-prone. This comprehensive inspection ensures we don’t miss any potential tick habitats, allowing us to provide a targeted and effective treatment plan for your yard.
Our tick control service starts with an assessment of your needs, whether it’s indoor, outdoor, or both treatments you require. For homes with pets, we usually suggest treating both areas to ensure full protection. This helps us create a custom treatment plan tailored to your home.
Our technician will inspect your yard to identify tick hotspots and treat up to half an acre using moisture-activated granules with lasting effects. Additional yard areas can be treated for an extra charge. Indoors, we use a B&G sprayer to apply a precise treatment.
After your first tick treatment, we offer a complimentary follow-up visit two weeks later. This ensures any newly hatched ticks are taken care of. Our technician will inspect both the treated indoor and outdoor areas to ensure complete control.
If needed, treatments will be reapplied to disrupt the tick life cycle, helping to prevent reinfestation. Our goal is to keep your home and yard tick-free for the safety of your family and pets.
Serving La Mesa and its neighboring areas, we’re here to keep your spaces pest-free. Our team is passionate about these communities and always strives to provide outstanding service and dependable results.
